Bowes Museum

This purpose build gallery located at Barnard Castle, County Durham which opened in 1892 houses a wide-ranging survey of European art from the 15th century to the early 20th century. Built by the eponymous John Bowes, the illegitimate son of the 10th Earl of Strathmore it also has a world class collection of glass by Émile Gallé commissioned by Bowes' French-born wife Joséphine.

The eclectic breadth of paintings includes Lawrence Alma Tadema, Canaletto, El Greco, Reginald Eves, Fantin-Latour, Gainsborough, Oliver Hall, Raphael, Reynolds and Rembrandt.
