Buxton Museum and Art Gallery

This museum located in the heart of the Peak District houses over one thousand paintings, drawings and prints which concentrate largely on 19th century oils and watercolours by such artists as Samuel Bough, John Constable, George Morland and Wright of Derby. Also included are works by important 20th artists such as Marc Chagall, Frank Brangwyn, Maurice Utrillo and Augustus John. Most acquisitions of been made by donation or bequest but more recently the Lottery Funding has been of great assistance in developing the collection. The building was erected in 1880 initially as an hotel aimed at wealthy clients who came to Buxton to take the alleged health giving waters. During the World War I, the Red Cross used it to care for wounded Canadian soldiers and in 1928 the local Buxton Library moved in after vacating the Buxton Town Hall. It relocated to its present building during the 1960’s. Confirmation would be appreciated.
