Carmarthenshire Museums Service

The fine art collection held by Carmarthenshire contains over 500 items. Most of the works of art are closely associated with the county of Carmarthenshire, having been painted by artists from the county or by artists visiting the county. This west Wales county has its art collections in a variety of locations that include Carmarthen County Hall, Trinity University College, Parc Howard Museum and Art Gallery and Carmarthenshire County Museum. The latter, the County Museum is housed in a former Bishop’s Palace at Abergwili, near Carmarthen and began its existence as a museum in 1908 and opened to the public in its present location in 1978. Its highlights include a large collection of works by artist Morland Lewis.

Parc Howard Museum and Art Gallery first opened to the public in 1912. Its collection ranges from Llanelly pottery to paintings by Robert Hunter, Hubert von Herkomer, J. D. Innes, Christopher Williams and Stanley Lewis. The County Council buildings which include County Hall hold works of art by artists who have either lived or worked in Carmarthenshire. The majority of its holding is post-World War II.
