Colnaghi

Paul Colnaghi established his business at 132 Pall Mall in 1788 have previously worked in an art dealership learning his trade in London and Paris. Initially a dealer in steel engravings his breakthrough came during the period of 1792-1797, when he published what is probably the most famous series of English stipple engravings, ‘The Cries of London’. He went on the take advantage of important world events and in 1803 when news of Admiral Horatio Nelson's victory and death at Trafalgar reached London, Colnaghi had already commissioned a portrait engraving. His reputation grew and as such he handled the works of then contemporary artists such as John Constable and Richard Parkes Bonnington who would bring landscape engraving to Colnaghi for selling. By the middle of the 19th Century Colnaghi had added photography to their portfolio and entered into an agreement with Julia Margaret Cameron for the sale of her photographs in 1863. In 1911 the firm relocated to New Bond Street and today from nearby Old Bond Street still continues to sell world class paintings and works of art to international clients and galleries across the globe.
