Croydon Art Gallery

The Art Collection consists of over 2,000 works which are housed in the imposing Croydon Clocktower. The works in all media cover a variety of subject matter and have been produced by local amateur artists as well as those with an international reputation. The collection was first developed in the 1890's when local people donated works for display in the then newly built Town Hall and was added to until the 1960's. A major exhibition of works from the collections was held at Fairfield Halls in 1988. When the Museum Service was first established in the early 1990's, the Art Collection was transferred to its care and formally accessioned and catalogued in 1993. Artists represented include Alfred de Breanski, Patrick Hayman, Percy Craft, Julian Trevelyan, Harold Speed and Maurice Codner. In September 2013, the Museum re-opened the Exhibition Gallery on the ground floor of Croydon Clocktower to enable it to again display changing exhibitions featuring items from its diverse collection
