Ferens Art Gallery
Opened originally in 1906 as The Ferens Museum in Hull, it showed articles related to slavery and local history. In 1917, local Member of Parliament Thomas Robinson Ferens (1847–1930), donated funds for the building of a new art gallery. A decade later, the award-winning Ferens Art Gallery opened, combining internationally renowned permanent collections with a thriving programme of temporary exhibitions. The gallery's permanent collection traverses the medieval period to the present day. Included are European Old Masters, Dutch and Flemish, portraiture, marine and topographical paintings and modern and contemporary British art, including video. Renowned artists include outstanding works by Frans Hals (1582/83–1666), Antonio Canaletto (1697–1768), Stanley Spencer, David Hockney and Helen Chadwick. In 1993, Ferens won the Museum of the Year Award for the Best Museum of Fine and Applied Art.
