Gimpel Fils

Now at 30 Davies Street, the gallery was founded in South Molton Street, London by Peter and Charles Gimpel in 1946. They added "Fils" in homage to their father René, the dealer and collector whose journal 'Diary of an Art Dealer' was first published in 1966. They have traditionally encouraged painterly non-representational art, although not exclusively so, and among the contemporary British, European and American artists represented there have been Terry Atkinson, Charles Beauchamp, Gwyther Irwin, Albert Irvin and Louis Le Brocquy. Somewhat pioneers, during the 1950's and 1960's the gallery was associated with the avant-garde, giving Lynn Chadwick, Anthony Caro, Peter Lanyon and Alan Davie their first exhibitions, alongside exhibitions of Larry Rivers, Marcel Duchamp and Yves Klein.
