Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery

The gallery collection began as late as 1929 when a bequest of a group of 17th and 18th century paintings were left to the Island by one Wilfred Carey. The small collection was originally put on show in St. Peter Port in the Guille-Alles Library. Just before the outbreak of World War II it was moved to the disused Church of St Barnabus and during the German occupation of the Channel Islands the museum was closed for the duration.

Only in 1978 did the collection have a purpose built home at Candie Gardens, St Peter Port and since then the collection has burgeoned. The majority of works relate particularly to Guernsey and its coastline with of course a strong maritime bent as its history dictates. Currently there are in excess of 500 works of art in the collection, no mean achievement for a very small island.
