Lillie Art Gallery

This small gallery is located 7 miles north of Glasgow at Milngavie (pronounced Mulguy). It is renowned for its impressive collection of 20th-century Scottish art encompassing various media such as paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture and ceramics. It is a purpose-built gallery and opened its doors in 1962 and owes its existence to local banker and artist Robert Lillie (1867-1949), who left a significant number of his own artworks as well as funds to build the gallery. Since 1962, this founding legacy of artworks has been extended to form a collection of Scottish art dating from the 1880’s to the present day. Artists represented include Alan Davie, Joan Eardley, George Leslie Hunter, Samuel Peploe, Robin Philipson, Jessie King, Mary Armour, Anne Redpath, Adrian Wiszniewski and Ian Hamilton Finlay. Since 1996, the Lillie Art Gallery has formed part of East Dunbartonshire Museums service, along with the Auld Kirk Museum in Kirkintilloch.
