McManus Galleries and Museum

Originally opened as the Albert Institute for Science, Literature and the Arts in 1867 the gallery is housed in a Gothic Revival building and later became known as Dundee Art Gallery. In the mid-1980's the gallery underwent an extensive refurbishment project, expanding into the former library spaces and being renamed the McManus Galleries. This was in honour of Maurice McManus OBE, twice Lord Provost of Dundee who championed works during the period which stabilised the building. However by the Millennium it was clear that more work would be needed so a decision was taken to completely restore the building and its services. The project was completed and the McManus opened to the public at the end of February, 2010.

A fine art collection with over 4,000 works comprises oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, prints and sculptures. Coverage traverses 19th and 20th century Scottish Art with an emphasis on Dundee artists, who include John Duncan and McIntosh Patrick. Other Scottish artists represented are John Bellany, Francis Cadell, Stanley Cursiter, J. D. Fergusson and many more.
