Modern Gallery

The Modern Gallery appears to have been established in 1897 by one Edward Freeman. Its original location was at 175 Bond Street were it remained until 1904 before moving to 61 New Bond Street. Various art related societies used the premises and in 1898 the Inaugural exhibition of the London Sketch Club was held there. Other societies meeting there included the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers. The Modern Gallery relocated to 61 New Bond Street and appears to have ceased functioning circa 1918 but, two years earlier it had housed the inaugural exhibition of the Decorative Art Group. Marine painter Arthur Briscoe held his first solo exhibition at the gallery in 1906.

This establishment should not be confused with Jack Bilbo's Modern Art Gallery which was totally unrelated and did not begin its existence until 1941.
