National Army Museum

Based in the Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea this museum tries with great success to portray the history of the land forces of the British Crown. The remit includes British Commonwealth forces up to the time of a specific country’s independence. The comparatively small collection of paintings which numbers nearly one thousand painting and works on paper houses a number of works by some of Britain’s greatest practitioners. The range of artists includes Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, the American Benjamin West and Sir Henry Raeburn. Other famous more recent artists represented are Lady Elizabeth Butler, Lionel Edwards, Lucy Kemp-Welch and Rex Whistler.

Many works have been obtained through private donation or with the aid of funding from the Society of Friends of the National Army Museum, as well as the National Heritage Memorial Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund.
