National Museum of Wales

The art collection at National Museum of Wales, Cardiff is arguably one of Europe's finest. It houses many hundreds of fine paintings, drawings, sculpture and ceramics not only from the Principality but from around the world. Located at sites across Wales its main hub is Cardiff. Building commenced in 1912 but World War I delayed its completion and it was officially opened in 1927. As one would expect, there is a substantial collection of work notable Welsh art. These include paintings, drawings, and sculpture by Gascombe John, Augustus John, Gwen John, Ceri Richards, David Jones, Kyffin Williams, Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, Stanley Spencer, Wynford Dewhurst, L. S. Lowry, Oskar Kokoschka, Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach and Rachel Whiteread. The major collection of French art is due to the bequest of sister Margaret and Gwendoline Davies. The works bequeathed in the 1950’s and 1960’s paintings by Daumier, Jean-François Millet, Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Cézanne, Renoir and a version in bronze of Rodin's ‘Kiss’.
