Nuneaton Art Gallery

Established in 1917 through the generosity of local benefactor Edward Melly, who became the first curator of its collections. His portrait by Edward Samuel Harper (1854–1941) is held by the Gallery in their permanent collection. Sadly in 1941 enemy bombing not only causes the death of Edward Melly but severely damaged the building and it loss of important records stating the origins of many works of art.

The Gallery did not reopen fully to the public until 1960 when the last of its collection was put on public view. The diverse character of the collection echoes the fact that its expansion has in the main be derived from donation rather than deliberate purchases. Artists represented include Robert Weir Allan, Noel Brannan, Arthur Wardle, Miles Balmford Sharp, Frederick Goodall and Yeend King.
