Oriel y Bont

The gallery was created in 1983 and houses the art collection of the University of South Wales, formerly known as the University of Glamorgan. It comprises a variety of artwork produced since 1910, plus related archive material. It mainly consists of paintings and works on paper but it also has some examples of fine art photography, ceramics and metal and wood sculpture. The Collection focuses on the visual culture of South Wales created in the main since the late 1930's. Its exhibition spaces are located within Tŷ Crawshay which is a listed building dating to the mid-nineteenth century, originally owned and occupied by the wealthy industrialist William Crawshay II (1788-1867).

Oriel y Bont also offers a rolling programme of educational exhibitions based on the University's art collection and visiting works by artists who are or have been involved with the visual culture of modern and contemporary South Wales. The first works entered the collection during World War II when the university was still the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines which was established in 1913, at the peak of the South Wales coal industry. Artists represented include Jack Crabtree, Joan Baker, Charles Burton, John Elwyn, Nicholas Evans, Clive Hicks-Jenkins, Ceri Richards, John Selway, Ernest Zobole and many more.
