Rotherham Art Gallery

From its creation in 1893, the Gallery was originally linked with Clifton Park Museum. However in 1976, a purpose-built gallery was opened in the centre of the city forming part of Rotherham Arts Centre. It closed in 2011 and a newer building opened the following year again in the centre of the city. For a city often overshadowed by its neighbour Sheffield with its illustrious galleries and collections Rotherham boasts some fine art examples. It has four works by Thomas Gainsborough, the same number by Richard Reinagle and fine examples by Anthony Van Dyke, George Morland, Johann Zoffany and H. H La Thangue. More recent examples include paintings by Ethel Walker, Mark Fisher, James Bateman, Rowland Suddaby and Ernest Moore.
