Salford Art Gallery

Salford Museum and Art Gallery, located in Peel Park, Salford, Greater Manchester, first opened to the public in November 1850 as the 'Royal Museum & Public Library'. One of greatest artistic claims to fame was that it used to house the work of LS Lowry, but his paintings are now in the Lowry Centre in Salford Quays which is newly theatre and gallery complex. The Lowry as it is commonly known gallery, is a 2000m² gallery and houses more than 300 works by the artist. The building was completed in 1999 at a cost of £106 million assisted by a Lottery Grant of £21 million. HM Queen Elizabeth officially opened the building in October 2000. Artists in the collection and or who have shown there include Malcolm Arbuthnot, Jiri Borsky, Helen Bradley, Morley Bury, José Christopherson, Fred Cuming, Ken Gribble, Geoffrey Key, Emmanuel Levy, John Anthony Park, Harold Riley and Hal Yates.
