Scarborough Art Gallery

The Gallery is located in an Italianate villa situated in Scarborough’s beautiful Crescent gardens. It was built in the late 1840’s by the wealthy Uppleby family but has since had a many owners. In 1924 it was bought by a local solicitor and renamed ‘Crescent House’. Scarborough Corporation acquired the building after his death in 1942 and in 1947 it opened as an art gallery. The gallery houses a permanent collection built up over more than sixty years through gifts, bequests and purchases to reflect the diverse mix of the community and the cultural heritage of this famous seaside town.

In the permanent collection are paintings donated by famous hotelier Tom Laughton the brother of the film star and actor Charles Laughton. Names such as Atkinson Grimshaw, John Jackson, Matthew Smith, Frank Brangwyn all feature large in the collection. The range of modern prints include works by John Piper, Elizabeth Blackadder, Ossip Zadkine and Kenneth Rowntree. There also a range of posters designed by a variety of artists for London North Eastern Railways all centred on the town of Scarborough.
