Sligo County Museum

The Museum was opened in 1955 in what was a local Manse House which had been used as a residence for the clergy having been built in 1867 next to the local Presbyterian church. The building has also been used as Sligo Library a year before the manse was 'converted.' The area has strong connections with the Yeats family and there is much memorabilia of W. B. Yeats and drawings by his brother Jack Yeats. Other artists represented include George William Russell, Seán Keating, Anne Yeats, Charles Lamb, Estella Solomons and objects associated with Constance Markievicz and her sister Eva Gore-Booth. A new museum and library was planned and designed in 2001 with plans finalised the following year. Despite funds being granted and construction begun in 2008, the project appears to have been abandoned for reasons that are not apparent to the writer.
