Warrington Museum and Art Gallery

Warrington Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1848 making it one of the oldest museums outside the capital. It moved to its current location in 1858 and its collection ranges from prehistoric animals including a dinosaur, social history of the town and its environs, Egyptian antiquities and a collection of about 1000 paintings including works by Arthur Hayward, Helen Bradley and Luke Fildes. A fine collection of work by local sculptor John Warrington Wood (1839-1886) is also housed by the art gallery including 'St Michael Overcoming Satan'. The gallery's strong exhibition programme has recently featured works by street artist Banksy and by Tracey Emin and Sam Taylor-Wood.
