Brighton Guild of Applied Art

This was a craft association formed in Brighton, c.1911 and was active until at least 1918. William Herbert Bond, Headmaster of Brighton School of Art, 1905-1918, was instrumental in establishing the Guild. In addition to Bond, members of the Guild included the illustrator Gwynedd May Hudson, the painter and lithographer Katharine Richardson, the jewellery designer Mabel Bendall, the engraver, medallist and bookplate designer George Taylor Friend, the bookbinder Alfred de Sauty, the embroiderer Florence M. Baskett, the graphic artist, painter and illustrator Elizabeth Ellen Houghton, the painter and wallpaper and textile designer Pickford Robert Waller, the graphic designer and illustrator Mildred Cash, the painter and printmaker Mary Lanchester, the graphic designer Irene Fawkes, the jewellery designer, painter and art metalworker Margaret Jane Awdry, the weaver Florence M. Baskett, the illuminator and decorative artist Laura G. Puttick, Geoffrey Alan Baker, the silversmith and jewellery designer Bernard Cuzner, the painter and architect John Leopold Denman, the painter and poster designer Henrietta Violet Adamson, and the painter and poster designer Conrad Houghton Leigh. The architect and designer William Richard Lethaby (1857-1931) served as Vice-President of the Guild. An exhibition of work by the Guild was held at Brighton Art Gallery in 1912. Work by members of the Guild was also well represented in the British Arts & Crafts Section at the Ghent International Exhibition in 1913.
