British Art in Industry

A now largely forgotten exhibition sponsored by the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Academy and staged at Burlington House in 1935. The exhibition was created to show that British design contributed to the establishment of trade and that British designers were among the best in the world. One important aspect of this exhibition was that it was the first in Britain to garner a selective panel of experts to ensure the quality of the exhibits displayed. Some of the exhibits including two pieces from the 'Forest Folk' dessert set designed by Victor Skellern for Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Ltd., a garden dining room and bedroom designed by Oliver Hill, a crystal decanter designed by H. Munro for Edinburgh and Leith Flint Glass Works, carved boxes in ICI's Resin 'M' designed by Reco Capey and a dining table in anodised aluminium with walnut top designed by Sir Ambrose Heal for Heal & Son. Other participants included Tom Purvis, Rosemary and Clifford Ellis, Agnes Pinder Davis and Arthur Pollitzer amongst many.
