Bystander

The Bystander was a British weekly tabloid magazine featuring reviews, topical sketches and short stories. Published from Fleet Street, it was established in 1903 by William Comyns Beaumont, who later edited the magazine, 1928-32. It was notably fashionable in World War I for its publication of the "Old Bill" cartoons by Bruce Bairnsfather. It also published some of the earliest stories of Daphne du Maurier, who was Beaumont's niece, and it ran until 1940, when it merged with the Tatler under the incarnation ‘Tatler & Bystander’ until its demise in 1968. Well-known artist who had work reproduced in the magazine included Arthur Barbosa, Percy Bradshaw, Humphrey Lyttelton and Alfred Bestall of Rupert fame.
