Golden Cockerel Press

Golden Cockerel Press was a major force in the revival of the British wood-engraving. It was an entirely English private press founded in 1920 by Harold (Hal) Midgley Taylor (1893-1925) and was first located in Waltham St. Lawrence, Berkshire. It soon became famous for its production of limited edition superbly crafted handmade books. These were exclusively typeset by hand often employing unique typefaces designed by Eric Gill. A key characteristic of Golden Cockerel books were the original illustrations, usually wood engraved by the cream of British artists of the day. Those masters of the technique included Robert Gibbings, John Buckland-Wright, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Agnes Miller Parker, David Jones and Eric Ravilious. The Press ran until 1961.
