Sussex University

Classified as a 'Red Brick' Sussex University was founded in 1961 and was designed fresh from his triumph at Coventry Cathedral, by the great architect Sir Basil Spence. There were high hopes of building a major collection of 20th Century art works but sadly despite many fine artists in residence spending time at the Falmer campus, this has yet to materialise. So, what now exists is a rather eclectic mix of works that were acquired by purchase and or donation with no particular theme or direction running through it. Nevertheless there are some fine examples by luminaries such as Ivon Hitchens, David Oxtoby, Dennis Creffield, Bryan Organ and possibly a work attributed to Turner! An important collection of the paper, drawings and paintings of Holocaust survivor Arnold Daghani is deposited in the University.
