Third Eye Centre

Founded in 1974 by the Scottish writer and playwright, Tom McGrath it has hosted visiting artists and performers of the calibre of Allen Ginsberg, Whoopi Goldberg, painter John Byrne, poet Edwin Morgan and novelist and punk poet Kathy Acker and as such soon became the hub for Glasgow’s counterculture. During the 1980’s it presented exhibitions by the new then up and coming Glasgow School with exhibitors who included Stephen Campbell, Ken Currie and Peter Howson.

With its demise at the turn of the 1990’s, its place was taken by the Centre of Contemporary Arts which opened in 1992. The CCA, (not to be confused with the English CCA) commissioned and exhibited works by Scottish based artists as well as showing work by internationally known artists. In 1996, the CCA was awarded a lottery grant resulting in the redevelopment and expansion of its building in Glasgow’s famed Sauchiehall Street. The newly refurbished complex was opened in 2001 and is supported by the SAC.
