Yale Center For British Art

The Yale Center for British Art is a museum that houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. It was initially presented to Yale University by former alumni Paul Mellon, (1907-1999) who studied there in 1929. The collection concentrates entirely on the development of British art and culture from the 15th century to the present day and continues to evolve. The collection comprises over 2,000 paintings, 20,000 works on paper, 40,000 prints and over 35,000 important books and manuscripts. The reference library holds in excess of 40,000 books on British art and related fields for research purposes. Artists who are represented include British master such as Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, Thomas Gainsborough, Turner and John Constable, as well as major artists from Europe and America who lived, worked and contributed to art in Britain. Artists of the 20th & 21st Century who are represented and or have exhibited there include Maggi Hambling, Christopher Le Brun, Dorothy Brett, Victor Pasmore, John Hoyland, Frank Auerbach and Humphrey Spender amongst many.
