Art Students League

This New York based art school was founded in 1875 and is located on West 57th Street south of Central Park and close to the Museum of Modern Art. Arguably the most important art teaching establishment on the American continent, for over 130 years the foremost American artists have both taught and been taught at the 'League'. Its former teachers include William Merritt Chase, (1849-1916), Lawrence Alloway, Thomas Hart Benton, Alexander Calder, Thomas Eakins, Philip Guston and Childe Hassam.

Noted former students of the 'League' include Milton Avery, Louise Bourgeois, Helen Frankenthaler, Charles Dana Gibson, Winslow Homer, Louise Nevelson, Barnett Newman, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Man Ray, Frederic Remington, Norman Rockwell, Mark Rothko, Ben Shahn, Frank Stella and Cy Twombly to name but a very few. Many of the 'League's' students particularly during the mid-20th century formed an essential part of the advancement of artistic styles from Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art to Conceptualism.

Other American cities have an Art Students League such as San Juan, Puerto Rico and Denver. To my knowledge, they are not related.
