Dundee University

Dundee University was officially opened in 1881. At that time it did not have university status but, an agreement was reached with St Andrews in 1890 that Dundee students could graduate there, and in 1897 it became a college of St Andrews University. In 1954 it was renamed Queen's College, but in 1967 the college finally won its independence and became the Dundee University. The University also has superb collections of art as well as one of the most important medical history collections in the country, yet surprisingly the University does not currently have a permanent museum to display its treasures. They are also responsible for the Duncan of Jordanstone College Collection, featuring works by former students and staff at the College. The collection has been much enhanced by bequests. The first in recent times from Alan Woods (1956-2000) who was a collector of art, books and of music and bequeathed his outstanding collection of contemporary artworks to the University. It includes artists such as John Bellany, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Susan Hiller, Ian Howard, Ron Kitaj, Will Maclean, Tom Phillips, Ralph Rumney, Edward Summerton and many of Wood's students from the College.

The collection while focusing mainly on Scottish painters of the 19th and 20th century, also includes work by major English artists such as Gainsborough, Constable and the Pre-Raphaelites.
