Hassall School of Art

John Hassall established his own art school c. 1900 which apart from its closure during World War I ran for nearly three decades. It was based at 3 Stratford Road Kensington which is now a very upmarket tea rooms. In 1910, the school amalgamated with Frank Brangwyn's private art school known as the London School of Art. His daughter, illustrator Joan Hassall assisted her father as Secretary and also taught briefly while still a student at the RA Schools. Hassall's staff as yet largely unknown did include illustrator and Royal Academician George Belcher, Vernon Hill, Niels M. Lund, William Nicholson, Joseph Simpson, Ernest Borough Johnson, Joseph Oppenheimer and Uellina Parkes. His pupils included Guy Malet, Harriet Sefton Fish, Sidney Strube, H. M. Bateman, Gladys Peto, Harry Rountree, A. R. Thomson, Sybil Andrews, Bruce Bairnsfather and no doubt many others.
