Westminster School of Art

No longer in existence, this art school was located in Deans Yard, Westminster and was part of the old Architectural Museum. There was an Elementary Drawing School located in Westminster which started in 1852 and was probably a forerunner to Westminster School of Art which is known to have commenced taking in pupils in 1876 in premises on Tufton Street. It was still open to students until the 1970’s.

The Principal during its formative years was Frederick Brown, who did much to establish the reputation of the institution. Later Principals included W.H. Loudan (1904-18), Walter Bayes (1918-34) and R. Kirkland Jamieson (1930's). Well-known alumni and teachers include H. M. Bateman, Aubrey Beardsley, Robert Polhill Bevan, David Bomberg, John Craxton, Mark Gertler, Walter Sickert, Bernard Meninsky, Ethel Walker, Duncan Grant and Canadian artist Emily Carr to name but a few.
