Conceptual

Conceptual art is concerned with ideas and meanings rather than with shapes and images. The term came into use in the late 1960's although it could be argued that Marcel Duchamp's 'Fountain', 1917 a urinal laying on its back, was the first example of this art form. It is meant to express a wide range of types of art that no longer took the basic structure of a regular art entity. Conceptual art was a movement of the 1960's and 1970's but has been hugely influential since. Practitioners include Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Victor Burgin, Michael Craig-Martin, Gilbert and George, Yves Klein, Joseph Kosuth, John Latham, Richard Long, Piero Manzoni and Robert Smithson. The annual Turner Prize is the most famous exhibition espousing Conceptual Art.
