Blackheath Art Society

The Blackheath district of south London has long been a magnet for artists, with its World Heritage site at Greenwich, Goldsmiths' College and some of the most diverse scenery and architecture ranging from urban decay to the glorious spaces of the Blackheath Common, Greenwich Park and the River Thames.

The Art Society commenced in 1947 with Graham Sutherland as first President, and a bevvy of distinguished artist and educators with links to Goldsmiths' and Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts. Founder members included John Mansbridge, potter Heber Matthews, Clive Gardiner and Leonard Daniels, all college principals and artists Jean Cooke, Rowland Hilder, Anthony Gross, Terry Scales and John Bratby were all early exhibitors.
