London Portrait Society

Founded in 1928, this somewhat obscure Society seems to have functioned only spasmodically during the inter-war years. It held its first annual exhibition at the Burlington Galleries located at the rear of the Royal Academy. Australian born George Coates was a founder member as was fellow countryman James Peter Quinn. It would appear that it was largely populated by “Commonwealth” artists from Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Annual exhibitions were held at the New Burlington Galleries, London the last seemingly in April 1939.
