Plymouth Society of Artists

Founded in early 1944 the main protagonist was the Principal of Plymouth School of Art Lewis Duckett. His idea was to establish an exhibition based in the city art gallery in the hope that it would become a regular feature and attract and encourage visitors both local and from further afield to visit what would be called the Plymouth Society of Artists. Members and exhibitors would be restricted to artists who were or had lived in the city or had established strong connections with Plymouth. Disciplines would encompass not only fine art but printmaking and sculpture.

Artists who have exhibited include Borlase Smart who acted as Vice President from inception until his death in 1947. Others included Alexander Mackenzie, Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Terry Frost, Denis Mitchell, Tony O’Malley, Paul Mount, Roy Walker, Anthony Frost, Bryan Wynter and Michael Praed to name but a few.
