Royal Ulster Academy

The records of the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts incorporate the papers of its forerunners, the Belfast Ramblers' Sketching Club, (est. 1879) and the Belfast Art Society, which became the Ulster Academy of Arts in 1930 and was granted Royal status in 1956. Unlike other United Kingdom academies, the RUA has at the time of writing no permanent home. Membership is by peer nomination. Illustrious past members include Mildred Butler, William Conor and Charles Lamb while Neil Shawcross, Julian Friers and Elizabeth McEwen are all elected members working in the 21st century.
