Society of Landscape Painters

The Society was founded on the birthday of J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) on Sunday, 23 April 1988 over 200 years after his birth. By the terms of his first will, Turner had wished to devote his works and fortune to the setting up and maintenance of a Charity or Institution for Landscape Painters; he had also wished for an artists' dinner to be held annually on his birthday. Unfortunately, these wishes were never carried out. The Society of Landscape Painters held its inaugural exhibition at the gallery of W. H. Patterson, London in 1989. A second exhibition followed in 1990 but information on subsequent shows is scant. Well-known exhibitors include Jean Cooke and David Gluck.
