FRY Minne 1933-2025

A South African-born artist, educated at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Fry came to prominence with an exhibition in 1958 at the New Vision Centre in London, which Denis Bowen, Halima Nalecz and Frank Avray Wilson ran. She became a British citizen and completed her training at Central Saint Martins, London, where she studied under Mervyn Peake, Maurice Kestelman, and Roger Hilton. One of her paintings was bought by Eric Newton for the Contemporary Art Society when she exhibited at the WIAC.

Until 1980, Minne Fry painted exclusively in oils, after which she began using watercolours, and went on to study printmaking at Morley College under Adrian Bartlett. She exhibited widely in Europe and South Africa, under the patronage of the South African Embassy, to commemorate President Mandela's visit to London. Fry enjoyed a long and successful career, exhibiting in London with the Centaur Gallery, the Bloomsbury Gallery and Camden Arts Centre. As well as her semi-abstract paintings, she also produced original etchings and prints at the London Print Studio and she exhibited at the RA.
