SAMPLE Paul 1947-2026

Cartoonist and illustrator born in Leeds, Yorkshire, who studied at Bradford College of Art and Central School of Arts & Crafts in London, obtaining an Honours Degree in Graphic Arts. Sample was the creator of Ogri, the famous biker character and his cartoon strips of motorcycle adventures. The cartoon was used by Bike magazine for 35 years up to 2009. Several books of his cartoon strips have been published, and he has also worked for clients such as British Airways, Smirnoff Vodka, Radio Times, Melody Maker, Men Only, Dunlop, Post Office, The Times, The Sunday Times, the Daily Telegraph and Ford Motors. Sample has also designed book jackets for prominent authors like Tom Sharpe, publishers such as Oxford University Press and magazines including Men Only.

In January 2010, there was an auction sale by Halls of Shrewsbury with nearly 300 lots of Paul Sample's art and material from his archive, which attracted buyers from around the world. The highest price for an Ogri cartoon strip was £1200.
