SEDGLEY Peter 1930-2025
London-born painter and installation artist who studied architecture, 1944-46 at Brixton Technical College, London. He saw military service in Egypt, 1948-50, and in 1958, he founded a Co-operative of Associated Technicians, concerned with design and construction. Sedgley began painting in 1963 and held his first solo exhibition at McRoberts and Tunnard Gallery, London, in 1965, with a second solo exhibition in the same year at Howard Wise Gallery, New York, USA.
In the late 1960's, his work took a different direction after meeting with Bridget Riley. It passed, like hers, through a monochromatic period into experiments with a controlled chromatic scale and could thus be deemed part of the Op Art movement. In 1968, he was the founder with Riley of ‘Space’, an acronym for Space, Provision, Artistic, Cultural and Educational. It was a scheme for providing studio space for young artists. He has shown at the Redfern Gallery, London and in 1973 held a retrospective at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham. Sedgley was also an early protagonist of the little-known Systems Group in 1969. In more recent times, Sedgley’s work has concentrated on light itself and has incorporated sound with the images. His work is represented internationally in public collections, including the University of Warwick Art Collection, the Tate Gallery and the ACGB. Sedgley lived and worked in Germany for some years.
