Claridge Gallery
The Gallery was located at 52 Brook Street, London, opposite Claridge's Hotel, hence its name. It opened in 1925, and according to its publicity at the time, it 'intended to give young artists a chance to show their works without the devastating charges and commissions of the modern West End galleries.' However, its opening exhibition, in July 1925, was a 'memorial of the great John (Singer) Sargent (1856-1925)'. It was last noted in 1931 with a one-man exhibition of the works of Philip Steegman (1903-1952). Artists who exhibited at the Claridge Gallery include John Arthur Dodgson, Frances Hodgkins, Cedric Morris and Peggy Somerville and many more during the gallery's comparatively short life.
