Millinery Works

The Millinery Works was a commercial art gallery that was opened in 1996 by Derek Rothera and Brian Thompson on Southgate Road, Islington, North London. The building was a former Victorian hat factory, hence its name. It was a showcase for Arts & Crafts and Aesthetic Movement furniture and objects from Gothic Reform to the Cotswold School. The proprietors ran regular selling exhibitions of contemporary painting and an annual Modern & Contemporary Art exhibition during July and August, including specialised design pieces by highly regarded makers such as Christopher Dresser (1834-1904), Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) and Robert ‘Mouseman' Thompson (1876-1925). Heal’s bedroom furniture was often in stock, as well as smaller items such as Liberty & Co dressing-table sets and ceramics from the Glasgow School. The gallery closed in 2021.

Artists who exhibited at the 'Millinery' included Vera Waddington, Hugh Mackinnon, Roderic Barrett, Cecily, Sash, Gordon House, Gerald Wilde and many more.
