Pallant House Gallery

Pallant House located in the centre of the Sussex town of Chichester boasts one of the best collections of Modern British art in the UK. The catalyst for the collection was undoubtedly Walter Hussey, (1909-1985) the Dean of Chichester Cathedral from 1955-1977, who bequeathed his extensive art collection to the city in 1985. Other donations have helped turn the collection into a tour de force of Modern British art. Walter Hussey's original gift included works by Henry Moore, John Piper, Ceri Richards, Graham Sutherland and others. Since then the collection has swelled by the addition of modern artworks by Duncan Grant, Barbara Hepworth, Ivon Hitchens, John Minton, John and Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, Matthew Smith and Christopher Wood to Old Master prints and drawings by Albrecht Dürer, Giovanni Bernini, Thomas Gainsborough, Rembrandt van Rijn, Giulio Romano and Jean Antoine Watteau.

There are now very many important examples of British Pop Art such as Peter Blake's 'The 1962 Beatles', Patrick Caulfield's' Portrait of Juan Gris' and Richard Hamilton's 'Swingeing London '67' as well as works by artists including R.B. Kitaj, Eduardo Paolozzi, Colin Self and Joe Tilson. Figurative art is also well represented and includes important additions by the likes of Michael Andrews, David Bomberg, Lucian Freud,, Prunella Clough, William Coldstream, Peter de Francia, Nigel Henderson and Victor Willing. Major continental artists of the 20th century are represented by Paul Cézanne, André Dérain, Le Corbusier, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Gino Severini and Pablo Picasso.
