Primavera Gallery
Primavera was founded in 1945 by Henry Rothschild, born Heinrich Wilhelm Jacques Rothschild (1913-2009) at 149 Sloane Street, in London's West End. Rothschild's objective was to sell the best of British fine arts and crafts to the public. With an eye for fine aesthetics, he exhibited the works of Bernard and Janet Leach, Lucie Rie, Michael Cardew, Dan Arbeid, Ian Auld, Ray Finch and Hans Coper, who held his first solo exhibition at the gallery in 1958. In 1959, Rothschild purchased a gallery at King's Parade, Cambridge, close to his home, and by the mid-1960 he was exhibiting textiles, stained glass by Geoffrey Clarke, and paintings by Mary Potter. He also arranged exhibitions with the Cambridge-based Kettle's Yard gallery. Henry Rothschild eventually closed the London gallery in 1971.
In 1999, the Gallery was purchased by Jeremy Mark Ralph Waller (b. 1953) who redesigned the space to accommodate more work on three floors of the King's Parade site. Primavera's main gallery and shop span three floors, housing a diverse and outstanding collection of handmade British arts and crafts comprising jewellery, art glass, textiles and top-class ceramics.
