Rowan Gallery

Founded in 1962 by Alex Gregory-Hood (1915-1999) a former Colonel in the Grenadier Guards. From this most unlikely of backgrounds, he opened the Rowan Gallery in Lowndes Street, in the fashionable London district of Belgravia. The gallery was to form a coterie of forward-thinking establishments amongst the first to bring British abstract and experimental art to a post-war public.

In 1982, although the Rowan was a flourishing, viable entity, the UK property boom and ensuing property price rises forced Gregory-Hood and the Rowan to retrench and seek a partnership with Annely Juda Fine Art trading as Juda Rowan in the Tottenham Mews location. It lasted until 1987 when he entered into a second partnership with the Mayor Gallery, this time trading as the Mayor Rowan Gallery. Property prices rose again, and sadly, after a few short months, the Rowan ceased to exist.
