Spacex Gallery
Founded in 1974, the Spacex Gallery, an artists' co-operative, was housed in a 19th-century warehouse building located near Quayside, Exeter. It was a publicly funded organisation for contemporary art and artists, and in 1990 became a registered educational charity. Spacex exhibited work by up-and-coming artists as well as internationally celebrated artists. Artists who have shown there include founder John Butler, Angus Fairhurst, Geoffrey Ridgen and Paul Rosenbloom. Artists of international repute who have been seen at Spacex include Sol Lewitt, Bridget Riley, Gillian Wearing and artist and political activist Gustav Metzger. In 2015, the gallery lost its regular Arts Council England (ACE) National Portfolio funding. Despite efforts to continue via project-based funding, the organisation deemed its model unsustainable and formally closed in 2017.
The Preston Street site was later reopened as PS45 Gallery, continuing to host contemporary exhibitions in the same location.
