Tib Lane Gallery

This was a prominent gallery in Manchester for many years, having begun in 1963. The gallery was located at Tib Lane, off Cross Street in central Manchester. However, I cannot be certain if the address was no.10 or no.14a, as both are quoted in various texts. The gallery was a key venue for exhibiting modern and contemporary art in Manchester, and it played a significant role in the Manchester art scene. The gallery was run by Geoffrey Green and later by his wife, Jan.

The gallery was instrumental in promoting the work of L.S. Lowry, staging several one-man exhibitions of his work. In the early 1970's, it famously rediscovered and championed the work of Adolphe Valette, Lowry's tutor, often selling his "pochades" (small oil sketches) to queuing collectors within minutes. The gallery officially closed in 1977.
