Victoria Art Gallery

The galleries collections houses works by more than 2000 artists ranging from the 15th century to the present. Local amateurs are included as well as the great names such as Thomas Gainsborough, Johann Zoffany and Thomas Lawrence who painted the wealthy people visiting the city often to take the waters. The more recent artists include Glyn Philpot, Walter Sickert, who resided locally, Henry la Thangue, Walter Langley, John Nash and Howard Hodgkin.

During World War II, Bath suffered serious bomb damage much of which was recorded both before in the 'Recording Britain' series and after by the likes of Katherine Fryer, Phyllis Ginger and Leslie Atkinson. The location nearby of the Bath Academy of Art at Corsham encouraged the artists Clifford and Marry Ellis and William Scott to reside in the vicinity and examples of their work are housed in the gallery collection.
