Cleveland International Drawing Biennale

This Biennale established in 1973, during its twenty-three years of existence boasted entries from artists such as Jane Bond, Pete Cobb, John Emanuel, Kevin Geary, Peter Lloyd Lewis, Simon Lewty, Euphemia MacTavish, Peter Philip, Anita Taylor, Paul Thomas and Shelagh Wakely. Defunct from 1996 it reopened in 2007 in the guise of MIMA the newly opened Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art emphasising its dedication to both modern and contemporary art. The Biennale had previously conferred Middlesbrough with one of the UK’s largest collections of contemporary drawings that include works by Victor Pasmore, Tracey Emin, Toby Paterson, Paul Noble, George Shaw, Bob and Roberta Smith and a permanent wall painting by Turner Prize winner Richard Wright. The opening exhibition fittingly entitled ‘Draw’ received critical acclaim not only for the quality of its entries but for the newly designed building by architects Erick van Egeraat Associates which brought together the collections of the original Middlesbrough Art Gallery and Cleveland Art Gallery.
