Laing Art Competition
This competition was named after Alexander Laing (1828-1905), the businessman and philanthropist who founded the eponymous Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1904. It was a prestigious national landscape and seascape painting competition in the UK that ran for several decades. Artists were invited to submit landscape and seascape paintings for exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London and at the Laing Art Gallery, which was believed to have commenced in the early 1960's and ran for at least three decades.
